W. Thomas Andrews

W. Tom Andrews, oldest son of Ralph and Mary Andrews, was born November 8, 1941, and grew up in Mt. Jackson. He earned a BA degree from Wooster College and a law degree from the University of Pittsburgh. Soon after becoming an attorney in 1966, Tom married his high school sweetheart Leslie Nord, and they had two children, Arlyn and Robbie.

In 1969, at age 28, Tom was elected Lawrence County District Attorney, the youngest DA in Pennsylvania. In 1972, at age 31, he was elected to the Pennsylvania State Senate and served two terms. At the end of his first term, he had a 100% roll call record. During his 8 years in the Senate, Tom served on several committees and, as third ranking Republican, chaired the minority caucus. In 1981, after his second term, Tom became secretary of the Senate for a year before resuming a private law practice in New Castle which he continued for over 25 years. Tom also became a financial planner and for several years hosted a local radio talk show giving financial advice.

Tom’s distinguished career is all the more remarkable because he battled multiple sclerosis for most of his adult life. But he didn’t let that stop him. As he said at a 1998 banquet honoring him, “I may have MS, but MS doesn’t have me and it’s not going to.” With his optimism and determination and the help of a supportive family, Tom is a stellar example of how to master rather than be mastered by fate.

Tom’s battle with MS came to an end on September 14, 2009, but his legacy to his family, profession, and community lives on. A memorial service for Tom, held at Mt. Jackson Presbyterian Church on September 18, drew a huge crowd. People spoke of his courage, his humor, his many accomplishments, his devotion to family, his strong moral sense and commitment to justice. Well-liked and admired, Tom was and remains an inspiration to all who knew him.
